Frameless, Standoff, Channel or Semi-Frameless?
The look and the price both come down to how the glass is fixed. Here's how the four common Sydney balustrade fixings compare — and what we'd recommend for your run.
Frameless spigot
12mm toughened panels clamped in 316 stainless spigots bolted to the floor. The cleanest, most popular look — nothing above the glass but an optional slimline handrail. Best for decks, balconies and level runs where the view matters.
Standoff (point-fixed)
Panels held off the edge of a slab or stair stringer by polished stainless standoff pins. A premium architectural look for staircases and mezzanines where you want the glass to appear to float off the face.
Channel-set (base shoe)
The glass sits in a continuous aluminium U-channel along the base — no visible fixings at all. A crisp, minimal line for level balcony and pool-surround runs; the channel is packed and set to hold the wind load.
Semi-frameless (posts)
12mm glass between powder-coated posts (black, silver or bronze). The most budget-friendly compliant option, and the easiest to fix to older timber or unknown substrates. A classic framed look.
Cantilevered
A fully frameless barrier where the toughened glass is the structural element — base-fixed in spigots or a channel with no top rail and no posts. The most seamless 'wall of glass' look for balconies and pool surrounds; the glass and its base fixing are engineered to carry the wind and barrier loads on their own.
Built for Sydney conditions
A glass balustrade is only as strong as what you bolt it to — the fault we see most is spigots or standoffs fixed into a substrate that can't hold them. On exposed Sydney balconies we design to the wind loading in AS 1170.1, and on beachside and canal-front homes we use 316 marine-grade stainless so the fixings don't rust out. On stairs the glass steps up tread by tread, sitting on each step — never run as one diagonal sheet along the stringer.
Engineered to Australian Standards
Every balustrade is supplied and installed to the codes: AS 1288 glass design, AS/NZS 2208 Grade-A toughened safety glass, and NCC barrier heights (865mm on stair flights, 1000mm on landings, balconies and decks) with a 125mm maximum gap. We service glass balustrades right across Greater Sydney — the eastern beaches, north shore, inner west, the Hills and the Sutherland Shire — from our Greenacre workshop.
